Loud Park 08

On Saturday morning I got up at about 7:30 left Chubu at about 9:00 and headed to Nagoya. From there I went to Tokyo via the shinkansen and then took some local trains to get to the Saitama Super Arena. It took about three hours in total. Unfortunately, I got there about an hour late and missed a few of the bands. But I did get to see Obituary, Meshuggah, Dragonforce, Sonatica Artica, Carcass and Avenged Sevenfold. They were all pretty sweet!

Dragonforce:
Before Dragonforce played, they came out and had a signing session. As they were walking back and Lisa and I talked with them briefly and she got some pictures with one of the band members. It was awesome talking with them and meeting them!

Japanese People and Mosh-pits:
From what I saw and felt Japanese people don't really mosh. They get as close together as humanly possible and then push/sway back and forth, side to side, slightly violently, but not really, and generally you can't fall over because everyone is so close together. It's strange, but I'm glad I experienced at least once. Mind you, this "mosh-pit" consists of a maybe 300 people out of the ~40,000 people in the show. Just about everyone else was, just chillin and standing still or sitting in the stands. I thought this was weird considering some of the most metal bands on the planet played and people weren't moshing and going nuts everywhere.

I took the overnight bus back to Nagoya and that was so much better than Greyhound. The seats were so much more comfortable, the bus was smoother and quieter, and of course everyone was really nice. Overall it was a great time, but a little expensive. I'm glad I went and would gladly go next year.

I took my camera, but I didn't want to take into the "mosh-pits" so I checked it at the coat check. Here are a few pics I found online that sum up what I saw...

Hi Morgan: It seems like a fantastic experience! I'm so glad you went! Was the audience dressed weirdly like in the US? Were they goth? Or any particular style? Was the music super loud? Is Loud Park 08 the name of the event or the name of a location?

Have you heard of most of those bands before? The only one I am familiar with is Motley Crew. Can you get me some samples of the music of the other bands? Was it sung in English? Some in Japanese?

Dad's in California till tomorrow. I'm going to DC on Wednesday to make jam. Lilia's doing well and preparing for a competition this week-end. She leaves on Wednesday at 3 AM to catch an early flight to Orlando. She and one of the other teachers are doing a very athletic/dangerous (I think - I couldn't stand to watch them practice when I was there) dance -- she has to spin on his shoulders among other acrobatic things. She was dropped on her head and knocked out in June while practicing this routine when they were first learning.

Love, Mom
