Multi-cultural Party - 9/21/08

Hey everyone, Today (Sunday) we all went to a multi-cultural party in Nagoya. It was a good time except for the hammering rains that hit us a few times during the day.

We ended up at the Yokiso-Villa (north garden) which was built by Jirozaemon-Suketami Ito. He is the founder of Matsuzakaya Department Stores. Before WWII the house he built on the property was used as a dormitory for Asain students who were being educated in Japan.

Our time spent at Yokiso-Villa can be broken down as such:
1. Guided tour of the property. Unfortunately, because of massive amounts of rain the tour was cut very short.
2. Lunch and Meeting. They gave us sushi. It was all tasty and we had good conversations with the people there and the Japanese students who came along with us.
3. Tea Party. They gave us tea and taught us how to hold our cup.
4. Kimonos. Two people from the audience tried on full-blown kimonos and they walked around for everyone to talk pictures(see below).
5. Ocarina performances. Japanese musicians played Ocarinas for about 45 minutes. They played well and it was enjoyable listening to them.

When our time at the Yokiso-Villa was over we left to roam Nagoya. We went to a temple that was close to the villa and on the way we ran into a bunch of street vendors and local Japanese people.

When we returned a group of us were shown an Italian restaurant by Shimegi, one of the Japanese students at Chubu who is helping all the exchange kids. The food was pretty good and really cheap. I'll probably go there again.

Pics of the day. Everything from departure to the return home:

Peace. Classes start tomorrow. Should be a good day.

Morgan - thanks for all the pics and a description of your day. The rain was fierce - it looks like you all had umbrellas but probably got all wet. I like the Ocaria - it reminds me of the pipes played in Ecuador.
Again this message was sent at 4:30 AM - whew! You gotta get more sleep!
Have fun during day 1 and let us know what classes are like.

Hi Morgan! Hey, what GREAT pictures and movies. The ocarina has such a pretty sound.

It's really a shame that there was so much rain. It looked like a beautiful place.

Are all the other foreign students comfortable with J food, including raw fish? I'm really glad you are!

Thanks for such a wonderful documentary of your day. Good luck tomorrow. I hope you have a great time. It will be exciting and maybe overwhelming! Just keep your spirits up and work hard!

Love you - Mom
